Derek Scott, a British ornithologist passed away on 21 November 2022.
He was born in England in 1944 and educated at Bradford Grammar School and Oxford University. After completing his Ph.D. on the breeding biology of the Storm Petrel at the Edward Grey Institute in Oxford in 1970, he worked for six years at the Department of Environment in Iran, as head of the Department’s Ornithology Unit.
I had the privilege of interviewing him as part of an ongoing project to document the oral history of wildlife conservation in Iran. He was suffering from various age related health compromises but he was generous and kind during long hours of our discussion at his home in Somerset, southwestern England.
In memory of his services to bird conservation in Iran during the 1970s, a few obituaries have been published in Payam-Ma newspaper which can be downloaded here.
